Houdini Glass Shatter

Voroni Shattering objects

August 2015

I’ve been playing around with voroni fracturing; how to control fractures and materials such as glass. I began with the basics, creating a basic voroni fracture, a static object and RBD object.

Next I changed the fractures so they were more clustered in the centre where the ball would hit, and have larger segments around the outside. The fragments bounce against the floor and the glass is anchored to the ground using glue constraints.

I added textures, lights and a camera and played with rendering, but I’m in dire need of practise – the amount of noise is horrendous. I’m going to redo the scene and hope to add glue constraints following a separate tutorial, so that the outside slowly shatters, then hopefully dust and render.

Update: I’ve finalised this fracture and rendered using maya’s mental ray- hooray! ^_^

This was a fun project- in future I might try add particles for dust, or controlling different kinds of fractures. I’d love to do some slow crumbling of a wall for example.
